13-Year-Old Macon, Georgia Boy Evan Lee Shaffer Dies in Tragic Howard County Crash

A community is grieving after the tragic death of Evan Lee Shaffer, a 13-year-old boy from Macon, Georgia, who died Thursday following a moped collision with a pickup truck in rural Howard County, Indiana.

According to the Howard County Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred at approximately 1:51 p.m. at the intersection of County Road 750 West and County Road 00 North/South, located about 75 minutes north of Indianapolis. Emergency responders arrived at the scene, where authorities confirmed that Evan died as a result of injuries sustained in the crash.

Investigators said the preliminary findings indicate that Evan was operating a red and black Zuma moped when it collided with a black Dodge Ram 2500 pickup truck. The truck was traveling southbound through the intersection and was towing a trailer at the time of the crash.

The pickup truck was driven by 29-year-old Alexandria Doubet of Russiaville, Indiana. Authorities reported that Doubet was transported to a hospital in Kokomo following the collision, where she consented to a blood draw as part of the ongoing investigation.

The circumstances surrounding the crash remain under review as investigators work to determine exactly what led to the collision. An autopsy for Evan was scheduled for Friday through the Howard County Coroner’s Office with a forensic pathologist.

Loved ones have described Evan as a cherished son, family member, and friend whose presence brought meaning to the people around him. His passing leaves behind a lasting impact on everyone who had the opportunity to know him.
